There's an important difference between "my website looks old" and "my website isn't working anymore." The first is an aesthetic problem. The second is actively costing you revenue. A relaunch is worth it when you're dealing with the second case — and that's more common than people think.
Clear Signs It's Time for a Relaunch
- The technology is outdated. Your site runs on a CMS that's no longer maintained, or on hand-written code nobody understands anymore.
- Conversion is visibly dropping. Traffic is there, but inquiries aren't coming in.
- Your branding has changed. Logo, colors, or positioning no longer match the old website.
- Mobile visitors bounce at an unusually high rate. A strong sign of technical or structural problems.
- You can't make changes yourself without needing a developer — even for small text edits.
If two or more of these apply, a relaunch usually isn't a question of "if," but "when."
The Biggest Fear: Losing SEO Rankings
This is the point that worries clients most — rightly so. A relaunch can cost you rankings if it's handled wrong. The two most important levers against that: redirects — every old URL worth keeping should 301-redirect to its new counterpart. Without that, you lose both rankings and inbound links from other sites. And keep the URL structure where possible. If the structure has to change anyway, a clean redirect map (old URL → new URL) is mandatory, not a nice-to-have.
Cost and Timeline, Realistically
A relaunch is usually cheaper and faster than building from scratch, since content, structure, and often parts of the design already exist. Exact numbers depend heavily on scope — more detail on that in my article on website pricing.
The Process at a Glance
- Audit — what's working, what isn't? Technical foundation, content, current SEO status.
- Concept — new structure, new design, clear goals for the new site.
- Build — development, testing, content migration.
- Migration — set up redirects, go live, monitor rankings and traffic afterward.
